Star Wars & Disney

In the random case that some of you have yet to hear, The Walt Disney Company bought Lucasfilm yesterday, meaning that now Star Wars (And Indiana Jones) now belong to Disney completely.

There have been many very mixed feelings about this from just about everyone, and since I am a Star Wars fanfiction writer who just happens to love Disney, I felt you guys might be curious about how I feel about this whole thing.

Personally, I think it's s great idea, and its something that will, in the short and long term, benefit both Disney and Lucasfilm. This will open up new opportunities to Lucasfilm that were unavailable before, especially important since there is a second part to this very interesting news...there will be three new Star Wars films, with Episode 7 premiering in 2015. Yes, you heard me, three whole new films, ones that could very possibly include none other than our favorite duo, Han and Leia. Yes, this does bring up some concerns, but I'll get to that in a moment.

I know there are many people out there saying that Disney is going to ruin the films, but I say not so, and I have several reasons for believing this. First, I've seen what Disney and Lucasfilms can do together through Star Tours at Disney World and Disneyland. It's s very impressive attraction and really feel that it brought Star Wars (from the movies) to life while incorporating you into a new story at the same time (the rebel spy/star tours itself). The attraction really impressed me, a person who was recently introduced to Star Wars, but has a passionate for the movie making industry. Secondly, look at Marvel. While Disney owns the company now, "The Avengers" turned out great, and also gives us an idea about how Disney will be running Lucasfilm. The ideas of new movies are not going to be the classic animated children's films that many people, myself included, love from Disney. The continuation of the Star Wars saga and Lucasfilm will be run very similar to Marvel, with LucasFilm running almost as a separate company, just under Disney's leadership. It will provide new opportunities for funding for Lucasfilm to expand and grow to use the newest technologies on these next three films, and while the company is no longer separate, I do believe that the films will be very in touch with the Star Wars we already know and love.

But as I mentioned before, there are a few problems. It has been rumored that the next three films will focus around Luke Skywalker and the New Republic...but we all know that when you have Luke, you also have Han and Leia. Which brings up the question, will it be the original actors? Now, remember that it's takes roughly 3 years for each Star Wars film to be made, and since Harrison Ford is already 70, that would make him about 80 by the time these films were finished. Plus, he's already expressed that while he would be fine with another Indiana Jones film, he would not likely portray the scoundrel of Han Solo again. So who will be the new Han Solo, and will it ever compare to what is in the originals, or will they just write the character out completely? Will they move the storyline to focus more on their children and have cameos by the original actors, or will everything just be ridiculous? I don't know..none of us do, but I do know that no matter what, we have 9 more years of Star Wars films to look forward to, and you never know, if I ever get a job with Disney maybe I'll finally get a chance to meet Harrison Ford because of this!

What are your thoughts? And don't forget...tomorrow begins the next chapter in my own Saga that started with "40 Days!" That's right, "Promises" will premiere TOMORROW!!! I don't know an exact time, but for other information on the story and the release schedule, please check out the previous blog post! :)
